Turkey Rice Casserole

1 pound of turkey meat

6 cups of cooked rice

 6 cups of sweet potato

6 cups of carrot or veg-all

 3-4 cups of chicken broth or water

1-4 tablespoons of canola oil

Place turkey in baking dish and place in preheated 375 oven and roast for 30 minutes.  Bring 2 cups of water over high heat in 3 quart saucepan and add rice, reducing heat to medium-low, and cover, cooking for 15-20 minutes until all fluid is absorbed.  Set aside.  Meanwhile, place broth and vegetables in pot and heat over medium-high heat for 10 minutes.  Remove from heat and combine with turkey meat.  Either leave in chunks or blend in food processor.  Allow to cool somewhat and freeze in 1 quart zipper- style plastic bags.  Refrigerate overnight and then place in freezer.  To thaw, place in refrigerator from freezer two to three days in advance. 

Peanut Butter Treats

4 cups of whole wheat flour

2 cups of wheat germ

2 cups of peanut butter

1 1/2 cups of water

1/4 cup of honey

1/2 cup of ground peanuts

Place all ingredient in a large bowl and mix to combine.  Roll out dough on floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.  Using a cookie cutter- either doggie shapes (Wilton has lots of shapes and sizes from bones to fire doggie shapes) and cut out the desired shapes.  Combine left over scraps and continue cutting.  Place cookies on ungreased foil-lined sheets and bake at 325 for 30-35 minutes.  Makes approx. 5-6 doz depending on size of cookie cutter used.

Birthday Cake Surprise

1 pound turkey or chicken

2 carrots diced

1 10 ounce package of spinach, thawed and squeezed dry

1 cup cooked brown rice

1 tablespoon of canola oil

1 slightly beaten egg

2 hard cooked eggs, sliced.

1-2 cups of mashed potatoes

Place turkey, carrots, spinach, brown rice and oil, and raw egg in large bowl, mixing thoroughly to combine. Pat half the mixture into a greased waxed-paper lined 9 inch cake pan.  Layer hard cooked egg lices over mixture, then top with remaining mixture.  Bake at 350 for 45-50 minutes until done.  Remove from oven and let rest in pan for 5 minutes.  Use a large spatula, remove from pan, draining off any grease, and allow to cool for 15 minutes before frosting with mashed potatoes(from pastry bag). 

If you really want to decorate the cake, use your small cookie cutters- whether bone shape, heart shape, flower shape, etc and cut out some cheese shapes and place on top of the cake.

To make layer cake, can double recipe and use two 9 inch cake pans. 

Carrot Cake Cookies

4 cups whole wheat flour

2 cups of wheat germ

2 1/2 cups of mashed cooked carrots

1 cups of water

one 8 ounce can crushed pineapple in its own juice

3 tablespoons of ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

2 tablesppons of vegetable oil

2 tablespoons of honey

place all ingredients in bowl and mix to combine.  Roll out dough on floured surface about 1/4 inch thich.  Using desired cookie cutters whether dog shapes or whatever you like, cut into shapes until all dough is used.  Place on ungreased foil lined baking sheets and bake for 30-35 minutes.  Makes 5-6 dozen cookies depending on size and shape of cutters.

Food for Upset Tummy

Bring 2 cups of water to boil over high heat and add 1 cups of uncooked white rice. Reduce to medium-low heat, cover and cook for 15-2- minutes until water is absorbed.  Meanwhile, bring 2 cups of water to boil over high heat, add 1 pound of chicken breasts- reducing heat to medium -and cook 15-20 minutes until chicken is cooked through.  Remove chicken from water, cool, and cut into bite size pieces.  Stir in rice.  Makes about a quart. 

Offer small amounts four to six times during the day.  As your pet is able to keep food down, gradually add kibble until he resumes his usual appetite. (sometimes it may take a day or two.) 

Other bland foods to consider are cream of wheat cereal, cottage cheese and hard cooked eggs or you can use the puppy meatloaf diet on previous page.

Banana Treats

4 cups whole wheat flour

2 cups of grape nuts cereal

2 cups mashed banana

3/4 cups of water

3 tablespoons of ground nutmeg

1 tsp of cinnamon

2 tablespoons of canola oil

2 tablespoons of honey

Place on ingredients in bowl and combine thorougly.  Roll out to 1/4 inch thick.  Cut into desired shapes until all dough is used.  Place cookies on ungreased foil baking sheets, and bake at 325 for 30-35 minutes.  Makes approximately 5-6 dozen cookies depending on size and shape of cutters.
